Is Vegetarian Diet Really Healthy? Advantages and Disadvantages
Many actors, singers and models are practicing vegetarianism/ veganism. But is the vegetarian diet really good for your health?
It seems that for some people, their health have actually gotten worse since they went for vegetarian diets.
Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of going vegetarian, in health as well as other aspects. Note that they do not apply to everyone due to individual differences.
There are a number of different types of vegetarianism. To learn about them, see What is Vegetarian? Vegan? Macrobiotics? Learn About Vegetarianism.
1. Smoother Digestion
Animal-derived proteins take longer for us to digest than plants, which adds burden on our digestive organs. They also take more energy for digestion. That's why many people start feeling light and refreshed after they stop eating meat.
2. Detox Cleanse Effects
Consuming too much animal fats leads to poor intestinal environment due to increase in the number of bad bacteria in the intestines. This causes the toxic and carcinogenic substances in the intestines to increase. By avoiding meat and fish and eating lots of vegetables. you can stop toxins from forming inside your body and detoxify body wastes.
3. Stop Dairy Products for Better Health
Some people who are lactose intolerant do not notice it because their symptoms are light and not obvious. There are a few cases where people found their long-term health problems have gone away after stopping drinking milk. It might be worth a try.
4. Reduced Risk of Lifestyle Diseases
A number of research projects have found that vegetarians have lower risk of common diseases like cancer and heart diseases. Additionally, meat and dairy products are classified as acidic foods. It is reported that eating too much acidic foods increases the risk of diabetes.
5. Reduced Body Odor
Those who become vegetarian often find their body odor is reduced.
6. Improved Psychological Health
Some people feel good psychological effects of eating vegetarian - by feeling that they are doing good things for animals or the environment, or becoming more conscious of being good to the people and things around them.
1. Being Prone to Lacking Nutrition
Avoiding animal products makes you prone to lacking important nutrition like protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty acids. It is necessary to learn about nutrition and try to sufficiently take in these nutrients.
2. Simply Avoiding Meat Won't Make You Healthy
It's not so simple. Without balanced and nutritional meals, skipping meat won't make you healthy. Rather, your health may get worse because of lack of protein and other nutrients.
3. Reduced Bone Density
Vegetarians also tend to lack calcium. Vegetables contain calcium too, but it is not as easily absorbed as dairy. Try to eat calcium-rich foods like kale and broccoli, as well as magnesium and vitamin D, which help you absorb calcium better.
4. Poor Bowel Movement
You may become constipated due to lack of animal fats. However. eating good plant-based oil and fiber can actually improve your bowel health.
5. Not All Risk of Diseases Are Reduced
Going vegetarian doesn't mean you become immune to sickness. A study reports that vegans and non-vegans had the same risk of breast, colorectal and prostate cancer.
6. You Spend Less on Food? Not Really.
The cost of buying food will go down if you only buy vegetables? That doesn't seem to be the case.
If you are going vegetarian for health purposes, why not buy high-quality, organic vegetables?
Also, in order to take in the nutrients you used to supply with animal products, you should be eating good oils (such as flaxseed oil and avocado oil) and nuts.
Moreover, you may want to avoid cheap processed foods (they often contain animal products, and they're simply unhealthy).
All these mean that the cost of your food might actually go up by practicing the vegetarian diet.
7. More Time for Cooking
It is ideal to avoid processed and ready-made foods and cook your own healthy vegetarian meals. But this is very time-consuming and may be very difficult if you are a busy person. Forcing to go vegetarian in spite of having no time to take care of your diet is dangerous, because your meals may become imbalanced with low protein intake and too much carbs and fats.
8. Socializing May Become More Difficult
You might feel stressed about having to make people around you worry about your food when going out to eat with them.
9. Vegetarian Diet Doesn't Suit Everyone
Some people have actually experienced deterioration in health by having vegetarian/vegan diet. They felt that they got tired easily, or their menstruation became irregular. Once they started eating meat again, their health improved.
What do you think about these advantages and disadvantages?
In conclusion, we could say "the vegetarian diet is not simply good or bad."
Eating balanced and suitable meals and paying attention to other health aspects like exercise will let you lead a healthy and kind life towards yourself and others around you.
On the other hand, simply avoiding meat without considering nutrition, or forcing vegetarian diet despite adverse effects can actually make your health worsen. Also, if you feel a lot of stress by having to refuse invitations or not being able to eat meat, it is not good for your mental health.
